In episode 5, when the guy with the glasses asks is Yuki is one of the people that used to live with Tooru-chan, why is it that Yuki says not to call her that so casually? What does tooru-chan mean??? Why does Yuki react like that and call him sir? I just don't get it...help please? :)
Fruits Basket Episode 5?
In Japan, when you are adding '-chan' to a person's name, you are calling her affectionately, showing closeness. However, in this episode Yuki wants to imply that her family, except for her grandfather mustn't call her like that since they don't even accept her her as a part of their family, even letting her sleep in a tent.
Reply:Hmm...never thought much of that. I guess the first answerer is right in this respect since I know that -chan is used for endearment ie people close to you unlike -san which is more formal.
