In Fruits Basket how does Kakeru know Tohru from before?

His girlfriend's father is the person who hit Kyoko Honda, Tohru's mother, in the car accident. Komaki's father died instantly while Tohru's mom died momentarily. Kakeru thought that it was annoying that Tohru thought that she was the only one affected by the accident and confronted Tohru, saying that she was annoying while believing he was protecting Komaki. However, when Komaki discovered what he had done, she became angry and set him straight because of how he disrespected Tohru's feelings.

It's a small world! Kakeru's gf's dad was involved in the accident that Tohru's mom was involved in as well. Her dad and her mom died, and Kakeru resented Tohru for that (although she had no fault in it!) ;)
