Fruits Basket: Can anyone explain it to me?

I haven't watched it but I know it's very popular. But, I'm not sure I get it; is it supposed to be romantic? Funny? reading the guide in Wikipedia it sounds a little bit heartless and a touch sinister: How romantic can it be when the family are cursed to turn into animals when hugged by girls? And what's with the head of the household wanting to erase Tohru's memory, making her forget her friends even existed? (that's what I mean by sinister).

Someone please persuade me that it's not going to depress me!

Fruits Basket: Can anyone explain it to me?
The whole series is a very happy series. it has alot of funny moments and also a fair few moments with romance.

The anime story wont depress you but the last 2 or three episodes might.

i suggest you read the manga in goes into alot more depth than the anime series. the anime series leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

i can see how you think it might be hard for romance to be in there. but inside the family there are distant relatives and sometimes cousins that have relationships. and they can hug a member of the zodiac if they are one themselves without changing into an animal.

The comedy is just alot of smart assy jokes. its a quite entertaining series. And about Akito. he isnt the nicest of people. thats only because he has his own little curse. you see they erase peoples memories if they find out about them being able to change into animals because you can see how that might effect someone mentally.

you can read the manga series here:

thats all im going to say i hope you enjoy it :)
Reply:ok well the anime series is different from the manga. I suggest u read the manga its a lot better!!! its a love story in the end cause a relationship forms with everyone ^_^

u should really read it i loved it! i would read it over and over again ^_^
Reply:I would go for it!

You are right that it is romantic and funny %26amp; it's a fantasy, but it does have a darker side near the end, but nothing too depressing. it has a happy ending...well, you know...anime endings always leave you hanging somewhat....but everyone's OK or better in the end, and I thought it was good.
Reply:itz romantic/funny! aite? ohk. so like in tha middle of the series...she likes try to run away or sumtin like that. nd kyo gets her back nd stuff like that. nd akito goes to tha school nd they [kyo nd yuki] gets worried bcuz they afraid that he gonna erase her memory nd blah blah. i dont want to b a spoiler buh in the end...like ep 26 or sumtin? itz really really sad/romantic. so yah...XD itz juss like they help her overcome things nd make here happy nd stuff like that...they care for each other nd yah...juss watch it nd you`ll find out...XD

hop that helps...^-^
Reply:Fruits Basket is more action than romance. And actually the head of the house doesnt erase Tohru's memory, Hatori, the dragon, does. It's actually a relaxing anime.

Here's the real story:

Tohru Honda’s mother has died, leaving her alone in the world without a place to call home. But she’s not the type to give in easily: instead, she pitches a tent in a forest and continues to go to school to fulfill her mother’s wishes. That particular forest, however, is also the backyard of the Sohma house, and she soon meets Kyo, Shigure, and Yuki Sohma. When the three boys learn of her state, they offer her a home with them, to be repaid only by some light housework and cooking.Tohru accepts gladly, and begins walking to school each day with Yuki, who happens to be the “prince” of her school—the most desired boy because of his good looks. Soon, however, she discovers the Sohma family secret: they’re cursed. As a result, whenever a Sohma is embraced by someone of the opposite gender, they turn into an animal of the Chinese zodiac!
Reply:I know the Wikipedia explanation does make it sound a little depressing but comedy and romance is always there. When I read I the Wikipedia explanation,it got me a little depressed and mad because all it focuses on is the sad parts. The funny is there. There's alot of comedy at the very beginning of the series when Tohru meets Shigure. There is always funny parts in it.You just have to read it to really see all the comedy and romance. The romance grows throughout the series. The story is sad at parts but what story isn't?You will just have to read it to get what I'm staying. Then you'll be able to say,"I was right .This really is a depressing series." or "Wow...There really is comedy and romance in this series."

Or something like that.

But I suggest you read the manga. Not the anime. The anime stops around the 6th volume.

Hoped this helped.=]
